In another Twitter joust, early Sunday morning, President Trump attacked the Federal Bureau of Investigation, claiming “its reputation is in Tatters.” Of course, Trump vowed to fix the situation, offering no actual solutions – only sweeping sensational generalizations.
“After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters – worst in History!” Trump tweeted, in reference to former FBI Director James Comey, who was terminated by Trump in May.
Just moments before, Trump alluded to reports that special counsel Robert Mueller was forced to reassign an agent on the Russia probe’s investigative team for allegedly having sent anti-Trump messages. The agent had formerly worked on the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server.
“Tainted (no, very dishonest?) FBI ‘agent’s role in Clinton probe under review.’ Led Clinton Email probe. @foxandfriends Clinton money going to wife of another FBI agent in charge,”Trump wrote on Twitter.
Comey tweeted, ““I want the American people to know this truth: The FBI is honest. The FBI is strong. And the FBI is, and always will be, independent.” Me (June 8, 2017)”
Thomas O’Connor, Head of the FBI Agents Association, was also fast to repudiate Trump’s comments agains the Bureau, saying that the President’s suggestion that agents lack integrity and dedication “is simply false.”
O’Connor added, in a statement:
“Every day, FBI Special Agents put their lives on the line to protect the American public from national security and criminal threats. Agents perform these duties with unwavering integrity and professionalism and a focus on complying with the law and the Constitution… This is why the FBI continues to be the premier law enforcement agency in the world. FBI Agents are dedicated to their mission; suggesting otherwise is simply false.”
