Barack Obama Called Back To The World Stage By The Leaders That Matter

Former President Barack Obama is gearing up for a trip to Asia and Europe to meet with world leaders.

His trip comes on the heels of Donald Trump’s five-nation tour of Asia and will begin just after Ivanka Trump visits India. Obama will visit China and India before taking a stop in Paris. In each country, he will be speaking at summits.

Obama also has plans to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which will assuredly aggravate the sitting president. It feels as though Obama back in the spotlight means hope for sane, although unofficial, diplomacy: any sense of normalcy is what Trump has to up-end to remain in the spotlight.

“Active” Citizenship

Based upon a statement released by Obama’s spokesman, he appears to be fully aware that he still has an important role to play on the world stage. Obama’s focus while meeting with Jinping and Modi will be on encouraging citizen engagement. Given the fact that the Trump administration and Congressional Republicans are jointly chipping away at our social programs, environmental regulations, and civil rights, I’m going to go ahead and guess that Obama knows exactly what it means to be an “active citizen” in the United States today.

Obama’s spokesman said that he will be speaking at a town hall in New Dehli on Friday to “expand the conversation about what it means to be an active citizen and make an impact.” Indeed, Obama pushing “active citizenship” seems to be a direct hit at the Trump administration and an approval from Obama regarding the current climate of resistance in the United States.

Meanwhile, Ivanka Trump met with Modi on Tuesday during the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Hyderabad while on his tour of Asia. She spoke about female entrepreneurship and her focus on bringing women’s issues into White House policy decisions. She tweeted:

“It was an honor to meet with you Prime Minister Modi. Thank you for co-hosting the 8th annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit! @StateDept.”

Pay attention to Obama on the world stage. He’ll likely have some wisdom to share regarding our current predicament.
