During a Thursday meeting about immigration policy at the White House, President Donald Trump reportedly made disparaging remarks about the countries of Haiti, El Salvador and certain African countries — and now, one of those countries is demanding answers.

During the bipartisan meeting with lawmakers, Trump grew frustrated by demands that any immigration bill put forward provide access to the U.S. from these countries. Trump asked, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”

He singled out Haiti’s immigrants in particular: “Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out.”

A White House spokesman, when asked by reporters, did not deny that Trump made the comments.

Now, the Haitian government has responded to Trump’s hateful language.

According to Haiti’s Ambassador to the U.S., Paul Altidor, the Haitian government has moved to “vehemently condemn” President Trump’s comments. Speaking to NBC’s Yamiche Alcindor, Altidor said the government believes Trump’s comments are “based on stereotypes.”

“Either the president has been misinformed or he is miseducated,” Altidor said.

In addition, the Haitian government has formerly requested a U.S. official — presumably from the State Department — come forward to explain Trump’s insulting comments to them.

“Haitians fought along US soldiers in the revolutionary war and we continue to be great contributors to American society,” Altidor said.

Altidor also noted that Haiti’s embassy in Washington, D.C. has heard from many Haitian-Americans demanding an apology from Trump for his comments, which the ambassador called an “assault.

Trump has already drawn widespread international criticism for his comments on Thursday, including from former Mexican president Vicente Fox, who has been a regular critic of Trump’s immigration policies.
