Just when the world begins to think President Trump has hit rock bottom, he pulls out a diamond-tipped drill, revs it up, and rips down into the mantle of the Earth. His first year was an abject failure, full of policy blunders and geopolitical faux pas. It seemed like there were no mistakes left to make, no way he could further tarnish his office.
Then yesterday, in a room full of reporters and members of Congress, he let loose one his most racist comments to date by complaining about the fact that the United States accepts immigrants from “shithole” regions like Haiti, El Salvador, and Africa when it could be taking immigrants from places like Norway.
The overt racism of the comment offered a stunning glimpse into the clouded, bigoted mind of our commander-in-chief and dispensed with the persistent myth in some circles that there were any explanations for Trump’s past rhetoric other than racism.
Now, the United Nations has responded to Trump’s vile remarks, reports The Independent.
“If confirmed these are shocking and shameful comments from the President of the United States. There is no other word you can use but racist. You cannot dismiss entire countries and continents as ‘shitholes,’ whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome,” UN human rights spokesperson Rupert Colville said.
It’s a stunning rebuke from the international organization and shows how the entire world views the current American President. He has shredded the United States’ reputation abroad, and turned the presidency into a tawdry, xenophobic reality television show. Trump is racist and anyone who denies it at this point is either lying or delusional.
Every day he’s allowed to remain in power is another day that a white supremacist wields more power than any other person on the face of the Earth. America loses more and more of its moral authority and role as global leader daily. It can’t be allowed to continue.
